JGIWC playlist

I don't often talk about music because my taste is a bit eclectic and all over the map. Even so, I thought it may be fun to share the variety of tunes in my life and make a little JGIWC playlist. I think you can tell a lot from the songs that have influenced one's life... so here are some of mine.

As Time Goes By by Jimmy Durante My parents' wedding song. I get misty eyed when I hear it.

Bookends Theme by Simon and Garfunkel Many of the musical influences in my life are from The Wonder Years. Simon and Garfunkel was played many times in the show, and while I love a number of their songs, this is my favorite. The words are timeless. It is played during stills of Paul's Bar Mitzvah. I cry every time.

Canon and Gigue in D Major by Pachelbel Again with TWY. Kevin tried to play this on the piano but couldn't quite get it. I also want to walk down the aisle to this when I get married.

Crush by Dave Matthews Band This is the first DMB song I ever fell in love with. Ten years later, it's still my favorite.

Get On Your Feet by Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine Great lyrics. I grew up around Spanish music and this song is very, very Miami.

Give Me the Simple Life by Steve Tyrell Love, love, love him. Fantastic lyrics. I feel like he's one of the last singers left from a generation that I so appreciate. Father of the Bride is probably my favorite movie.

I'll Be There by Jackson 5 Let me tell you, I've been loyal to the Jackson family for as long as I can remember. This song is a nice little stroll down memory lane.

Never Saw Blue Like That by Shawn Colvin I can't listen to this without crying. We sang this at my senior sorority rush preference night. By the time last round came, my face was in my hands.

Non Believer by La Rocca I cannot, for the life of me, explain it. But I love it. It's so right.

Take a Bow by Madonna Come on. I grew up in Miami! That was back in the good ole days, when Miami was the height of cool. M resided in a sprawling mansion in Vizcaya and my great-godparents just so happened to live directly across the street from her. Yes, I used to sell lemonade mere yards from Madonna's front door. This isn't one of her more popular or better known songs, but it always brings me back. To youth. To heartache.

The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan Dylan is one of my heroes. This song applies as much today as it did 45 years ago.

Today I Met (The Boy I'm Gonna Marry) by Darlene Love From Father of the Bride. I've always imagined singing this to my future husband-to-be.

Thriller by Michael Jackson Like I said, very loyal to the J fam. This is MY song. I used to request it every year at my sorority formal and break out my sweet moves on the dance floor as soon as I heard "DUH DUHHH". I also have to hear this every year on my birthday. Best music video of all time. And while I don't yet know the whole dance, I aspire to someday.

We've Got Tonight by Bob Seger Yet another Wonder Years moment. This one is when Winnie breaks her leg and Kevin climbs up the side of her house so he can see her. She's lying in bed and opens her eyes. He mouths "I love you" and she whispers it back. Sobfest.

Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler The song my father and I will dance to at my wedding. Enough said.

I really think we would be great friends if we knew each other in real life! This list is fabulous. The Wonder Years and Father of the Bride references are just an extra added bonus :)

very cool list!
I walked down the aisle to Canon in D (after seeing Father of the Bride I wanted to do the same thing)...I also LOVE Today I met the Boy I'm going to marry. I remember downloading it about 2 weeks before my husband proposed. I also cry my eyes out when they play it in Father of the Bride and Steve Martin is thinking about Annie growing up...so cute!

Thriller...hands down..one of my fav songs of all time. One day I do plan to learn the dance...whenever I go to a wedding, I always request it (after a few drinks of course)!

Have a great week!

Oh my gosh, I remember you and Allyson absolutely balling during that song on pref night. It made me get teary eyed too! (I'm not really one to cry in public) Also, LOVE "Today I Met the Boy I'm Gonna Marry", he's all I've wanted all my life and even more! :)

I think we probably share an iPod. Anything from the Jacksons or Father of the Bride is tops in my book!

"Take a Bow" is definitely one of my favorite songs, but I feel like no one ever talks about it. No wonder we're friends. May also explain my obsession with toreadors and bullfighting. I usually hate violence, but when I was in Spain I couldn't get enough of it.

And duh. If it was ever on a FotB soundtrack, it's in my list of lifelong loves.

It's amazing how many of the same songs we all connect with, especially those that touch the heart. "As Time Goes By" and "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" are two classics we adore.

Gloria Estefan, Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson all resonate as well, especially your "beast music video ever" selection.

Great list Miss JGIWC!

This post has me coming out of lurkdom.

You must have been really young when the Wonder Years was on. Which means I am probably old enought to be your mother! :-)

What a perfect choice for your wedding! I walked down the aisle to Canon and Gigue in D Major just at the point the music swells. {I am not musically inclined, should I have said crescendo?} My wedding coordinator timed it and had me wait until just the right point.

Yes, please write a book. I love lurking here.

It's so funny you mention "Never saw Blue like that" It was on one of my first CDs ever (The Dawson's Creek CD, vol. 2) and I also cry like every time I hear it. Def. a memory of early adolescence for me.
I never thought about using it as a Kappa song though, it could work. We don't usually sing at pref night though because our rush groups are so small some PNMS find it intimidating (another house on campus does this and the general consensus from all of us having been through formal rush that it's creepy). We usually just do Pat or something. I would love to experience rush at a bigger chapter though!
Love the songs....
And I'd totally buy your book, and read it too.

We've Got Tonight is one of my all-time favorites too! Also, Bookends. I love that you used a few from The Wonder Years, it's my favoritefavoritefavorite tv show. I am waiting for the day that it is released on DVD, I'll be buying it all! I actually wrote my college essay on the show!
