You'll always remember your first...

As a Jewish teenager growing up in Dallas, I can't think of music that I connected to more than Dave Matthews Band. And as a writer, it mystifies me. It's like poetry come to life. "Before These Crowded Streets" is the first album I fell in love with. After eleven long years of being a DMB fan, I finally got to see him live at CitiField last weekend. My heart was beating so hard and I felt the music in my chest. It was exhilarating.

Standing in the crowd, two things became incredibly clear. 1) I am likely the only Dave Matthews fan who has never smoked pot. Ever. 2) I truly regret waiting this long to see him. I wish I had gone in high school. Shoulda, woulda, Prada.

I don't have one favorite Dave album - but here are the songs that are on my favorite DMB mix.

American Baby
Ants Marching
The Best of What's Around
Crush
Don't Drink the Water
Everyday
I Did It
Out of my Hands
Rapunzel
So Much To Say
The Space Between
Stay
Too Much
What Would You Say
You & Me

(No, Crash is NOT on the list. I think it's overrated - so sue me!)

You & Me is new, but it may be my all-time favorite Dave song. He sang it, and hearing it live was incredible. I hope that my husband and I will dance to it at our wedding someday.

Finally seeing Dave after all these years was so gratifying. It took me back, digging up memories and moments that have long been tucked away safely. I hope that my first was just the beginning.

  1. If it makes you feel better I like DMB and have never smoked pot. :) Imagine how us Snoop Dogg non-pot smoking fans feel!

  2. Another LONG TIME fan who has never smoked pot. To tell you just how long time...I used to go see DMB weekly in college, when they were a bar band in Charlottesville VA. Yeah, I'm old, and I've loved them since the very early 90s.

You & Me is fantastic, I agree. And you haven't lived until you've heard Rapunzel live. Glad you had fun and now fully understand just how phenomenal they are....even better live than in disc!

  5. I'm a long-timer who hasn't smoked pot! DMB actually played at NCSU during the 1990s...what a shame that I couldn't have seen them in that tiny of a venue! I can only imagine how fab that concert was :)

  6. I also love You & Me and secretly want it to be my wedding song. I have loved DMB since middle school and you need to hear "Angel" live...although they haven't played it since 2003 :(

  7. Oh, I love DMB! I've seen him a couple of times over the years, and it's always such a fun show!

I'm not a pot-smoker, either. Lilly stands out among the hemp-and-patchouli crowd!

  8. I am so in love with DMB as well. It's almost like comfort food in song. My first dance at my wedding will be to 'Baby Blue'. It seriously feels like he wrote the song for us. Love it.

  9. "Shoulda, woulda, Prada."

Possibly my new life motto. Adore you.

  10. DMB has always been one of my faves. I've seen him quite a bit. One of my fondest memories in college was me and my bestie deciding the first day of school that we'd buy DMB tickets and drive up all the way to St. Louis and then drive all the way back for classes the next day. Crazy. But those times are the best!

  12. So glad you got to see him! I saw him for the first time two summers ago. He's coming to West Palm next month, but unfortunately the show is already sold out! They really are amazing live. I have the "Live in Central Park" DVD and sometimes I'll play it when I'm cleaning and doing stuff around the house.

"You and Me" would make an awesome wedding song. "Dreamgirl" is one of my favorites, and I would love to dance to that at my own wedding, but unfortunately my boyfriend can't stand Dave Matthews :(

  14. So glad you enjoyed the show!!! I've seen him 15 times since high school and have never smoked! Although, sometimes just standing in the vacinity of other concert goers makes you smell as if you'd been lighting up too!

  17. I went to see him last year in Dallas, it was a lot of fun even though we were a little too cheap and got lawn seats instead of regular ones. I agree that Crash is overrated, too!

  18. Ahhh, I love you even more now!!!!

    1. I'm a converted DMB fan and have never smoked pot either. That's kinda the downside to his shows... They're SOOO smokey!! It's even worse at indoor venues.
    2. My fiance is obsessed with DMB. And that's putting it mildly. I grew to like them... Had to go to the shows with him so I figured I better start liking them! You and Me is the first song I've really connected with. Long story short, we picked it for our wedding song! I can't wait now. I was at the Saturday show so I didn't get to hear it live. Sad :(

  22. I'm a forever fan and forever drug free too. My girlfriend got peed on once at a DMB concert in college. So gross! She threw those shoes away immediately. Ha!
