Thirty Fucking Years, Part II

Here's the speech my dad gave at the anniversary party.

A few anniversary “pearls” I'd like to share…

30 years ago gold was valued at $613 an ounce.

30 years ago Iran and Iraq were at war.

30 years ago the world health organization announced the eradication of smallpox.

30 years ago the banking industry was deregulated.

30 years ago Ronald Reagan was elected president of the United States.

30 years ago the move “Ordinary People” won the Academy Award for best picture.

30 years ago the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl.

30 years ago “Genuine Risk” won the Kentucky Derby.

BUT the big news 30 years ago happened on September 28th at the Pierre Hotel in New York City when I married you and started on this wonderful journey together.

30 years ago the average income was $19,173.00 per year (that doesn’t even cover our property tax in Long Island!).

30 years ago the Dow Jones average was 891.

30 years ago a new car cost $7,201 and gas was $1.19 a gallon.

And 30 years ago my life changed forever in ways I can’t really put into words without getting extremely sentimental and just a little bit mushy.

Suffice to say that the first 30 years of this wild ride have been so very good that I am signing on for another 30 with an automatic renewal clause for an additional 30!

Thanks to all of you for being with us tonite. A special thanks to Lance and Vicki who came from London, to Lynn and Nancy, our Miami contingent, and to Vinnie and Elaine for staying up past their bedtime! We love all of you and we are so very lucky to count you among the near and dear.

And to Teddi and Perri – I wish for you the same joy and laughter your mom and I have found, both with each other and with daughters as amazing as you two. Don’t ever settle in life or in love.

And finally, to my better half, my sanity check, my best friend and the love of my life – Happy Anniversary my darling – you are definitely the “pearl” in my oyster.

I love you.

Editor's note: Dad, you are my hero.

  1. I may have teared up a little at "nd to Teddi and Perri – I wish for you the same joy and laughter your mom and I have found, both with each other and with daughters as amazing as you two. Don’t ever settle in life or in love." What a wonderful speech and father. Glad you got to celebrate your parents' marriage in this way! :)

  5. Full blown crying at my desk. In a good way for once! How beautiful! This September would have been 35 years for my mom and dad, and I know if my dad was still with us they would be just as much in love and happy as they always were.
I know that having that relationship as a model has made a world of difference in my life and I'm sure in yours as well. You are so very lucky to have a family brimming with love and support, and so very clever for being so very much aware and thankful for it.

Thank you for sharing this with all of us! xo

  9. Teddi-I have been totally behind on blogging/reading blogs (as you can see with my California to Cambridge) but this literally made me cry. Tears down face. UGH!
