A dear friend of mine said this absentmindedly as we were working together at Lilly one afternoon back in college, and it's stuck with me ever since. We used to joke that our fates were in line at a Starbucks somewhere, lazily drinking coffee and chatting with one another while we were dealing with messy break-ups and broken hearts. I'm pleased to say that she is now happily in love, and I... am just really happy.
It's true. Your whole life can change in the blink of an eye, much less two weeks. I am reminded of this quite frequently as of late. A bizarre chain of events on Friday night led to me sobbing in a bar very early Saturday morning... Everything is changing so fast and we're all growing up. We're no longer the bright-eye college graduates who came to New York looking for magic. But in our own way, we've each found it.
Change is inevitable and as Kevin Arnold once said it's never easy because you fight to hold on and you fight to let go. I'm fighting hard.
I think my fate is getting ready to pay and taking her latte to go.
love this.

ReplyDeleteI'm a long time reader, but this is my first comment. I just had to say it: this is one of my favorite entries to date!! The last line sent nothing but chills down my spine! I can just picture fate with a latte. Here's to a great new year!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteVery good writing in this entry! Love the elegance and sophistication in your tone of voice. You really are a great writer. And I hope you get your book & everything you want one day; sooner rather than later.
