Spring has NOT sprung

One of the things I don't understand about NYC residents is the way people FREAK OUT about a nice day, like they need to be outside for every single second of it because it's so fleeting and not a moment can be wasted. I am not a student of this school of thought, most likely because I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. Pretty, sunny days are the rule where I come from - not the exception. There have been many beautiful days before and there will be many more following. Surely we can enjoy it without acting as though it's the apocalypse.

I think this irks me a bit because Manhattan doesn't get enough credit! There are plenty of lovely days throughout both spring and autumn. No, it's not the sunshine state and it never will be, but isn't that the beauty of it? That we get to see four seasons here?

I will say, however, that I'm ready for spring. That's one bandwagon I'm always happy to hop on. The cold season was very good to me but it's time for a change. Just as I am always ready for cooler weather at the end of Indian summer, I am now ready for warmer weather as the lion (very slowly) heads out and the lamb heads in. One of my favorite physical assets are my legs and they have been bundled up in tights for a long winter!

You can't beat New York in the spring. The flowers are blooming, the breeze is blowing, and New Yorkers are visibly HAPPIER. There is so much to be enjoyed. Spring is all about new beginnings and I have a feeling a lot is going to happen for me in the next few months. Bring on the changes. I'm really, finally ready.

  1. I live in Western NY, and we get a ton of snow all winter long. Seeing that we spend so much time in cold weather, we long for spring and summer. It's a running joke that if you want to experience all four seasons in a day come to Western NY!

  2. Your observation of New Yorkers' apparent need to grasp every second of a sunny day is too true!! On my campus, students will find any excuse to be outside/wear shorts/sunbathe on a nice day with the idea that they can't waste any moment not enjoying the weather. I'm definitely part of this school of thought, though, because I get so depressed during the dreary winter and feel like the spring is so fleeting. Friday's 70 degree weather was fleeting- 2 days later and it was icing outside.

  3. As a native New Yorker (Brooklyn born and raised) I know what you mean. But while there are nice days in the spring through the fall, all the gray and the slush of winter, especially for those of us who got used to it as kids and didn't have sunny days as the rule not the exception, gets us a little worked up, just like white snow will. We don't get white snow, we get gray slush, and that's tiring. Sun is precious, there's nothing wrong with wanting to be outside in it as much as possible. Especially because it'll be cold again in a few days, New York's crazy in the beginning of spring.

  4. whenever it gets hot in DC my coworkers always want to eat outside, and when I say it's too hot, they are like aren't you from Florida, don't you always eat outside??
