26 things I learned about life, love and myself in the past year

1. I have a newfound passion and appreciation for creativity and curiosity.

2. A true friend will not resent you for expressing your true feelings.

3. You weren't going to come around, and I couldn't wait any longer.

4. Subtext will always be the most important.

5. Lounging around in my studio all day, writing quips and waiting in the wings to quickly catapult to authorial fame is a lovely dream, but not one that's likely to come true. At least not yet.

6. It really is all about the little things.

7. I don't like being compared to Carrie Bradshaw, because when I see girls who are NOTHING like her being likened to her, I shudder.

8. I love all things hand-drawn and should really get back in the habit of doodling.

9. Think before I speak. Then think again.

10. It isn't my fault.

11. I had no idea who the hell I was at 22, and if I'd followed the path I thought I was supposed to be on, I might be a bitter divorcee living in Boca.

12. I find inspiration everywhere.

13. Being healthy is more important than being thin.

14. I have great instincts.

15. My style has completely evolved, but the basic elements remain the same.

16. I can adapt almost seamlessly to change. Doesn't mean I always like it, but I can do it.

17. Men find me more desirable when I'm already spoken for.

18. I will always dress for the job I want, not the one I have.

19. I gradually and simultaneously become more open-minded and more discerning with each passing year.

20. Happiness is a mood, not a destination.

21. I don't give myself enough credit.

22. Opposites DO attract.

23. Keep calm and carry on.

24. I still haven't found what I'm looking for, but I sure as hell am enjoying the search.

25 was the best year yet, but...

26 is going to be even better.

Twenty-six candles

Today, I am 26.

I am reminded of a post I wrote last year about the things I learned when I turned 25.

So much has changed (all for the better) and I am in a very, very different place in my life than I was when I made this a year ago, but every single one of these idioms still rings true. This hangs on a big chalkboard in my kitchen and I often stop for a second or two to look at it and smile. I remind myself to stop and smell the roses, to take a deep breath, and to go the extra mile. And then I go on my merry way.

Thank you for the constant inspiration. I hope I give you back even a tenth of it.

Happy birthday to me!

Which one?

Which aspect of my meal was better last night?

Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Ivanka Trump (and her husband!) sitting at the table behind us?

OR

The fact that our [5 glasses of] wine were free? (The restaurant is new and doesn't yet have their liquor license. They serve wine unofficially and do not charge!)

You tell me. I can't decide.

Happy Friday and wishes for a wonderful weekend!

My favorite things under $10

It's no secret that I love to splurge. My parents brought my sister and I up with the notion that life is short and you should have what you want without going beyond your means. While I admittedly love my Louis and Louboutins, I have discovered that you can find luxury in small doses at even smaller prices.

While these Emi-Jay hair ties are considerably pricey when compared to Goody, they are a trio of good things: they look cute, work well, and part of the proceeds go to charity. Done!

I love this Forever 21 necklace - looks like it cost way more than the $8.80 I paid for it!

This Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser To Go is perfect for extending my blowout an extra day!

I will admit that the nondescript tube of this Sally Hansen Vita E Lip Soother was a big draw to this drugstore purchase. (I am very picky about cosmetic packaging.) But I must say that for around $5, it works and smells (vanilla-scented) wonderfully! (Unfortunately, I was unable to find this for purchase online. I think it's fairly new.)

Words cannot explain my excitement when my best friend directed me to this website. My favorite wine, Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc, for under $10! Wino snobs be damned; I don't know much but I know I love this. At these prices, I'm seriously considering ordering a case.

In a world where you can be anything, be yourself.

People have told me my whole life to 'be myself'. During sorority rush, for job interviews, on the first date. Always seemed like great advice, only problem was I had no idea who the hell I was and what it actually meant to 'be myself'. 25, as you've heard me say a million times, was an age of self-discovery. Cliches be damned; I found myself. 26 is right around the corner (a week from tomorrow!) and I think it will be about settling down with myself.

I say 'thank you' and 'I'm sorry' far too much. I value the tradition of the South and the prestige of the Northeast. I have Texas and Florida shaped holes in my heart. I love to eat and I hate to exercise. Sometimes I am happiest with an iPad in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. I have espn.com bookmarked in my BlackBerry so that I can check the Heat score wherever I am. I require a minimum of three celebrations per birthday. I like to kiss and hug and cuddle and handhold. When I set my mind to something, I have on blinders until I do it. I wear Forever 21 and Phillip Lim simultaneously. I wholeheartedly believe in splurging and spoiling, but I will climb through fixtures, dig through piles and scour the racks to find the holy grail of designer bargains. It makes me so happy to be able to devote my time to my Junior League committee and write checks to some of my favorite charitable organizations that I am currently unable to physically volunteer for. I would do absolutely anything for my girlfriends. I have the most amazing guy in my life who makes me smile (literally) a hundred times a day. My sister is the only person I will sing at the top of my lungs with. My mother is my best friend and my father is my hero. And I have never been so sure of the present and so unsure of the future as I am right now.

To those of you who are being told to yourself and are unsure what that really means, take it from me. Keep searching. You're out there somewhere, and you're amazing. Promise.

The TAG Room

I talk sometimes of my newfound appreciation for interior design, my love of Jonathan Adler, and my desire to outfit my future home in his pieces. It has become increasingly apparent that this option is less than likely. So I have decided to compromise. My next apartment will have a TAG room (or TAG corner, if you will) that will be sprinkled with JA's genius. It will be light blue and dark blue, just like my current studio, and I will integrate it with pieces that I already own to really bring the small space to life. I've given myself a $3,000 budget for the sake of this post. Right now it's pretend, but someday it could be real!

I daydream of curling up in the Mrs. Godfrey chair with my iPad, laptop, Nook, or a book...

Sometimes, I'd kick my feet up on the needlepoint links footstool...

I first spotted a similar Moroccan pouf in a Lilly Pulitzer store years ago. I actually love to sit on the floor, and this is, literally, a step up.

I already own this elephant needlepoint pillow.

This Meurice side table in nickel would look perfect next to the chair.

Every room needs a great mirror. The Meurice mirror in nickel matches the table and both are so well priced!

I think I'd use my leftover money (around $400) for some fun tchotchkes like the love paperweight, an enamel frame or two, and the turtle box. I'd also incorporate my West Elm Parsons desk and my West Elm Overlapping-Squares side chairs as they will fit in seamlessly with the rest of the pieces (and I already own them!)

So, what do you think? Would you hang out in the TAG room?

You've got questions...

And I've still got answers!

I've decided to delete my Formspring account, but you can always ask me questions here, on Twitter, or via email.

Many of you asked where I got certain items that I've featured on JGIWC recently.

My monogrammed Longchamp bag was purchased and monogrammed at Sands Point Gift Shop in Long Island, NY.

My gray wool braided headband is by San Diego Hat Company and was purchased at Anthropologie.

My white and navy striped sweater dress is from H&M.

My red and navy striped tee shirt dress is from Old Navy.

The anonymity factor of Formspring was just too tricky in the end. (I will never understand why people ask rude, obnoxious questions that they know I wont answer anyway.) But I do love answering most questions so please don't be afraid to ask away!

New Years Resolution from the Jewish Dad in Prada Clothing

(He's ba-ack!)

(If you're new to JGIWC, below is a guest post from my father, the JDIPC. He writes something witty for my readers once a month or so. Without further ado...)

2011 Resolutions

Lose the gut.
Adopt a mutt.
Treadmill and get off my butt.

Move to the city.
Be more witty.
Remind my wife she’s very pretty.

Master Wii.
Watch more Glee.
Make a little more time for me.

Support a cause.
Ignore my flaws.
Sing while driving just because.

Never lie.
Wheat not rye.
Teach my girls they must aim high.

Moisturize.
Super size.
Never ever plagiarize.

Happy new year Jewish Girl!

To Me, From Me

My birthday is right around the corner (3 weeks from today, to be exact!) and I am a big believer in buying myself presents to mark the occasion. I've already begun to treat myself, but if I were to go all out, here's what I'd get.

I'll admit - it's a little ridiculous to store an iPad in a case that costs almost as much as the gadget itself. But, come on. This Prada Nylon iPad Case is fabulous. And me? Already a little ridiculous anyway.

I'm usually more of a red box (Cartier) girl than I am a blue box (Tiffany) girl, but this Elsa Peretti Eternal Circle and Open Heart pendant is perfection in my mind. It encompasses all of my favorite aspects of jewelry: gold, turquoise, and delicateness.

And speaking of jewelry, oh how I would love to house my treasures in this Leontine Linens Round Jewel Box and have it sit atop my vanity table!

Normally I love flowers in square vases, but my weekly bouquet of blooms would look so pretty in this Kate Spade Larabee Dot Rose Bowl.

I am in dire need of a new puffer coat, and I love the Patagonia Pipe Down Jacket.

I have long lusted after these Bird Cheese Markers from Beehive Kitchenware. There are few things I love more than a cheese plate, and I daydream about entertaining with these in my future home.

I've been wondering about curling rods for awhile now, but after actually using one on my hair, (see New Years Eve photo, previous post) it has transformed from a want to a need. I've put off this purchase because I'm hoping to score some Sephora gift cards to trade for the Sultra Bombshell.

One gift that I'd love but would feel silly buying (sending) myself is flowers at the office. There's nothing better and it's the one upside to working on my birthday!

Miami, Miami, you've got style...

HAPPY NEW YEAR, READERS!

I want to share some of my favorite photos from my trip.

On our way to dinner at Casa Larios, Gloria Estefan's restaurant. I grew up listening to her and the Miami Sound Machine!

Standing outside of the mecca!

My mom, sister and I with Aunt Rhoda - the Millionaire Matchmaker's mother!

My mom spilled water on my shoes.

Visiting our brick at the University of Miami!

Dinner in Coconut Grove with two of my favorite girls.

New Years Eve!

New Years Day brunch.

Evidence of the retail damage we did :)

I hope everyone had a fabulous holiday season. Mine's only just begun as my 26th birthday is right around the corner! 11 is my lucky number and I just know that 2011 is going to be my lucky year. Let's do this!
