The Great Debate

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone debate about whether or not Florida and Texas are or should be considered part of the South, I'd head to the closest Neiman Marcus and buy myself a nice little treat. (Did you know that Neiman Marcus was birthed in Dallas?)

I'm not quite sure why people get so heated about this, but I'll give you my two cents. (Calmly and rationally, of course.)

To me, being Southern not only means that you were born below the Mason Dixon line, but that you have happily and voluntarily embraced the culture, the history, and the tradition of this part of the country. You drink sweet tea, you eat biscuits, you have manners, you say 'sir' and 'ma'am', you send handwritten correspondence, you have a deep understanding of the importance of sorority rush, you're a big hugger, and you bless people's hearts, to name a few. You understand that the South has a reputation and you make it your mission to uphold it as such.

I was born and raised in South Florida and spent my teenage years in North Texas. I wouldn't trade my adolescence for a thing. It used to bother me that I didn't grow up in one place but these days I see it as an advantage. It's made me a better networker, I'm easily able to relate to more people and I'm absolutely thrilled to meet anyone from my hometowns. Almost as thrilled as I am that I get to have two hometowns.

Are Florida and Texas 'The South'? In my mind, yes. Geographically, they're in the Southern region of the United States. Southern Living magazine has written about both cities I've lived in - Coral Gables and Dallas. Southern Living. A magazine about living in the South. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

I may live in the Northeast now but I will always fancy myself a Southern gal. No matter how hard you fight me.

Back soon!

It's been an insane week of freelancing, working and running around. I'm on the road next week but I have lots to tell you all! Expect more regular posting very soon. May was looking hopeless but I'm happy to say it's turning around and helping me to forget the disaster that was April!

Here I am at a popbar tasting, which I was graciously invited to by a fellow blogger and dear friend. If you live in NYC and haven't been yet, YOU MUST GO. I tasted a hazelnut bar dipped in dark chocolate and chocolate sprinkles. It was nearly impossible to stop eating this halfway through but my girlish figure begged me to quit. Trust me, I'll be back for that other half soon!

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Pink Agenda Annual Spring Gala

Last week, I was lucky enough to score a last minute ticket to The Pink Agenda Annual Spring Gala. It's a not-for-profit organization committed to raising money for breast cancer care and research and awareness of the disease among young professionals. Many of you probably saw my tweets about scrambling to find the perfect outfit. It felt very appropriate to wear pink, but I only own one cocktail dress with pink in it. (Isn't that shocking? I was sort of surprised myself.) However, the dress is from last summer, and I've lost about 15 pounds since I last wore it. With about 24 hours to spare, I ran to the tailor a few doors down and begged her to take in my dress by the following evening. The dress got done and I felt pretty in pink!

Here I am with dear pal Essential Luxuries! My dress is J. Crew; my shoes and clutch are kate spade.

The event was held at The Angel Orensanz Foundation in the Lower East Side - such a sexy venue. Hors D'oeuvres were catered by Danny Meyer - everything was tiny and delicious. Fried mac and cheese bites, itty bitty crabcakes, and sliders. Pink champagne flowed like water. It was a swanky soiree and I was thrilled to be there. I'm thinking of becoming more involved with this committee. It's such a great cause and does work I really believe in.

Think pink!

White Hot

No secrets here... I love underpinnings. I live for beautiful bras, lacy lingerie and pretty panties. (Though 'panties' is such a guy word... I usually prefer 'undies'.)

Naturally, I couldn't resist this sweet and sexy set from the Calypso St. Barth for Target collection. For less than $30, this is not only simply stunning, it's also a steal!

P.S. I also bought some of the sleepwear - all in white, of course. Is there any better shade for the summer? White clothes + spray tan = JGIWC feelin' hot!

Junior League House Tour & volunteering for Baby Buggy

I don't know about your chapter but here in New York, Junior League runs on a school-like schedule which means our year is coming to a close. As always, I attended House Tour with my parents this past weekend. The highlights were a five bedroom, two story apartment on the Upper East Side with an incredibly sleek and chic aesthetic as well as eating lunch on the 9th floor of the Architects & Designers Building in Midtown Manhattan - we sat on barstools up against a floor to ceiling window facing the beautiful Bloomberg Tower. I ran into a few girls I hadn't seen since we were provisionals - it was really nice. Time and again I'm so happy that I made the decision to join this lovely organization. Here I am at House Tour!

As League season comes to a close, I have to make sure that all of my membership credits are in. Last week, I heard about an opportunity to volunteer at Baby Buggy and signed up. This project has nothing to do with my committee and I actually didn't need the credit, but I was intrigued and wanted to help. I'm so glad I did. This charitable organization was founded ten years ago by Jessica Seinfeld and helps provide essentials to New York City families. This morning, myself and five other Leaguers spent two hours sorting and bundling clothes for kids. It was something so small that didn't take much time or effort but the people at Baby Buggy were incredibly gracious. It made me feel good. I'm looking forward to going back. Check it out - especially if you live in the city. Very cool.

My last volunteer project of the 'year' is on Sunday - exercising with kids at a park. I hope the weather is beautiful. My, how the time flies!

Vineyard Vines Fall Press Preview

Vineyard Vines was kind enough to invite me to their Press Preview last week, showcasing their looks for Fall 2011 and a few other goodies too.

Vineyard VInes has been named The Official Style of the Kentucky Derby. My favorite look from this limited edition collection is the Run for the Roses Dress and the Grandstand Hat.

Vineyard Vines is breaking into women's swim! All pieces are sold separately and priced moderately. Lord knows I'm working on my bikini body so I'm always excited to see new styles. This little number was definitely my favorite and should be available soon.

As for the Fall collection, I already have a wish list. Among my favorites were a chic sleeveless turtleneck cableknit and some great lounge pants that I fully intend on sending my little sis off to college with. But this tie skirt really took the cake. It is an absolute must have. Already planning on pairing it with a striped oxford also from their Fall collection.

A special thanks to my friends at Vineyard Vines for always keeping me in mind. I sure do wish you'd open a store here in New York City! (Hint hint, wink wink.)

RABBIT RABBIT!

Thank God it's May. April was brutal for me and I am very, very ready to move on.

I celebrated the end of the month in fun frocks with fabulous friends.

The first dress is Tracy Reese; the second dress is J. Crew (with Kendra Scott earrings).

Here's hoping that the April showers will bring us all many May flowers!
