JGIWC book club

Typical that the first time I don't put "read books" on my goal list... I read three in less than a month! Oh irony, you sneaky wisp. You get me every time.

I'm looking for a few book recommendations so I'm going to tell you what I've read lately in hopes that you'll do the same.

Why We Broke Up: Complete with illustrations, this book is a letter from a young girl to a young boy about their relationship and subsequent breakup. Quick, witty and clever. I really enjoyed this.

An Object of Beauty: I've loved Steve Martin ever since my dad took me to see Father of the Bride when I was 5. During Steve's opening monologue, my dad leaned over and whispered, "Doesn't he remind you of me?" It's one of my most vivid memories from childhood (and one of my favorite movies). Both men are brilliant and funny, so it's no surprise that my dad was actually the one who recommended and gave me this book. It's engaging and eye-opening, especially for someone like me who knows next to nothing about the art world. Laugh out loud funny.

The Lover's Dictionary: I literally started and finished this in the same day in the span of about an hour and half, and I am a slow reader. I love the point of view from which this was written. Something different. A quick, fun read.

The Darlings: This was recommended by a Waspy friend. It's about the financial crisis of 2008 from the viewpoint of, you guessed it, Wasps. I loved the first half of this but was a bit disappointed with the endings. I am very staunch about all loose ends being tied up and the conclusions left me with questions. Overall I enjoyed it and I think anyone truly interested in finance would appreciate this.

Bond Girl: Recommended by the same friend, this was my favorite of all. Also about the financial crisis of 2008 but from the viewpoint of a kick-ass girl working on the Street. So relatable, I swear sometimes I thought I was reading about my own life even though I've never worked in finance. Loved every minute of this and was so sad to finish it. Dying to meet the author. Highly recommend to any girls in their twenties and any girls living in New York. This is a can't miss. Promise.

Read any of these? Read anything good lately? Do tell.

  2. I am SO GLAD you read Bond Girl, too! I absolutely LOVED it. What a page turner! And I completely identified with her character, as well. I cannot wait to read more books by her!

  3. You MUST read "That Woman" its the biography of Wallis Simpson (the woman for whom the Prince of Wales abdicated the throne for in 1936). I am reading it now, its juicy but also fascinating and I feel like I am learning a lot. Its written so well, it reads like a good fiction book.

I also just read the Hunger Games (read all three in less than a week).

The Space Between Us was good. I also just read Mating Ritual of the North American WASP... but frankly I found it boring.

    Hope this all helps.

  4. Bond Girl sounds fantastic! I recently read Ali in Wonderland, which was fantastic. I love great memoirs, and her life as a pseudo-celebrity (except...not really) is quite entertaining.

  9. I loved WHY WE BROKE UP! But then again, I'm partial to YA because I write it!

Other favorite reads of mine are:

    Prep (Curtis Sittenfeld)
The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing (Banks)
    Looking for Alaska (Green)
    Imaginary Girls (Suma)
    Other Words for Love (Rosenthal)

If you can wait another year, you should add my book to your list! ;) It's got One Tree Hill influences in it! Who doesn't want to be like Lucas Scott!

  11. I lovee all books. I don't know what genre or type of book you tend to stick to, but my tastes range from chick lit to psychological thrillers to anything in between. I also own about 1000 books so I act as a library.

For some lighter reading, I highly recommend "Jemima J" and I'm also a big Jodi Picoult and Emily Giffin fan.

I second whoever recommended "Prep" as well as "The Hunger Games."

Also, Mindy Kaling's book is hysterical, as is Tina Fey's book "Bossypants."

I have so many more recommendations for youuu!
