PASS me the bread when it's OVER

Today marks the start of my least favorite holiday... Passover.

Starting at sundown, I have to cut almost all carbs out of my diet... anything resembling bread. This is never easy for me as I have the appetite of an NFL linebacker and find myself to feel quite limited whenever this week rolls around.

This year, I'm going to try to use the time off to my advantage and get a little creative... I'm even thinking of using it as an excuse to check a goal off my list: cook a meal in the shoebox! When I first moved to New York, I had one dish that I made fairly often: chicken in peanut sauce with sesame sautéed veggies. Easy and delicious. Sometimes with noodles, but not now. Wah.

I am breaking Passover one day early, however, because I am going to Texas next Friday. I can't bare the thought of being in Hill Country with dietary restrictions. Food is half the reason I'm going. It wouldn't be right. (I told my parents and they gave me the green light, so I don't feel as bad.)

But if you see me between now and then, I'll probably look like this:

  1. I had to make my diet wheat-free awhile ago, which I imagine is kind of like it being Passover all the time...it was a lot easier to transition when I filled my diet with lots of other starches like sweet potatoes, bananas, corn, etc. and it has actually introduced me to a lot of new ways of thinking about what a "meal" is (ie thinking outside the box of "breakfast must be cereal" or "lunch must occur between 2 pieces of bread")

  3. Happy Passover! The title of this post made me laugh. I admire you for abstaining when so many people are religious in name, but not in practice. As a vegetarian Catholic, I have it easy-I don't have to change my diet during Lent. But the whole fasting thing...woof.

  4. Chag Sameach Pesach!

Girl, do you have a Crock-Pot? It will change your life! Home-cooked dinner when you walk in the door after work, and all you did was throw stuff into it and let it do all the work. Get one if you don't have one already -- I promise you'll thank me later. :-)

  5. Happy Passover! As a carb-lover this would be SO HARD for me! And I agree with the above comment...a crock pot might be just your ticket!

  6. I don't think I could go without bread, haha! I'm Catholic and gave up cookies for lent, and it's been super hard, to say the least!

  8. I always use Passover as a time to cleanse. I clean out my house for religious reasons, but I also give away unused clothes, books I don't read and other stuff.

As for food- I stock up fruits and veggies.
