Kitchen heroes

The truth is, I've always enjoyed going to the market. Many of my childhood memories include weekly (sometimes more) trips to Publix with my dad, riding around in the cart or pushing a miniature cart around before they all got stolen (thanks, Miami). I loved looking at all of the food and getting the free Kids Club cookie at the bakery counter. Something about Publix is so quintessentially Florida to me (much like the now defunct Burdines, R.I.P.) and leaving it behind when we moved to Texas made me a little bit sad. I eventually settled into Tom Thumb, eatZi's, and Central Market, but never forgot about my beloved Publix. When I decided to go to college in Florida, I was irrationally excited about the chance to shop there again. Mostly because I was living in New York by then, and in my opinion there are truly no grocery stores here that compare to those of the South.

But I still like going. And I've discovered some products there lately that I'm really enjoying and want to share with you all!

Ola No Nut Vanilla Granola. If you're like me and prefer your granola on the plain side and nut-free, look no further. I have searched high and low for a good, simple granola and I have fallen so in love with this that I now buy it two bags at a time. My favorite way to eat it is sprinkled atop a bowl of berries, bananas, and honey, but it's good enough to eat in handfuls, straight outta the bag. (I haven't seen this anywhere other than my local gourmet market, but I'm told that Whole Foods carries this brand.)

Alexia Spicy Sweet Potato Fries. I am not at all ashamed to say that I ate these two nights in a row this week. They're such a good sidekick to my beloved Applegate Farms Turkey Dogs. I love them with ketchup, and they require no additional seasoning (for my taste, at least). Plus, the nutrition stats aren't horrifying!

Ben & Jerry's Blueberry Vanilla Graham Greek Frozen Yogurt. Oh, how I have been waiting to wax poetic on you my little friend! I was unsure about this because I am far from Greek Yogurt's biggest fan, but this is so delicious I can't believe that it's not actual ice cream. There are three other flavors, but the only other one I really want to try - Strawberry Shortcake - is the one flavor my market doesn't carry. So for now, I'm sticking with this. At 200 calories for a quarter of the carton, this is an indulgence I never feel guilty about.

Tell me what you've loved at the market lately? Especially if your market is a Publix.

  1. I love Wegmans! It's by far my favorite grocery store. I love their prepared foods--they always have a selection of healthy, quick meals there. And the best produce section around--always so many organic, local varieties.

  2. I shop at like 4 grocery stores every week, including Publix. Publix pineapple cake is bar none my favorite cake in the world. Their red velvet cupcake is to die for. I always purchase their frozen chopped onions and frozen seasonings blend (onions and peppers). Otherwise, it's what's on sale at each place that is clean food.

  3. 1. PB2. PB2. PEE BEE 2. www.bellplantation.com sold at your old fav, central market :) it's INCREDIBLE and such a fantastic, guilt-free swap for peanut butter. CM was out of the reg kind last night when i went, BUT they had the chocolate variety. i aint mad at that.
    2. van's light waffles. 70 calories per waffle. perfect with chocolate pb2 spread on top, and a spoonful of apricot jam :)
    3. ziploc steamer bags. holy amazing. i have NO idea how to like.. steam, boil, do anything to veggies, and this takes all of the guesswork out. i really don't like raw carrots, but i love them steamed. you just throw the carrots in the bag, follow the directions for how many minutes needed, and then in 5 minutes or so, you've got a bowl of delicious steamed carrots (or other veggie) - perfect with a sprinkle of salt or ginger :)

  4. I love going to the grocery store! Trader Joe's is my current go to, but I ADORE me some Publix when in FL and Wegman's when near one. I love Greek yogurt of all kinds, but recently found a new blended Fage that is less tart you may enjoy. Happy Shopping!

  5. omg. I love Publix. Everytime I go back home, I make a Publix stop. I've been to numerous grocery stores up here (including Wegmans) and they just do not compare to the awesomeness of Publix.

I particularly love the prepared foods at Publix. Whenever my friends and I would go to the beach, we'd always take/build a meal from there... oh, the rotisserie chicken, the subs... everything!

  7. Oh, Publix. I live in Georgia, so I have two Publixes within five minutes of my house. They always have the best selection of fruits and veggies. Love that place!

  8. I go to Rouses a Louisiana/Mississippi chain. Pretty good, way better down here than the Northeast you are correct. When I lived in Connecticut the grocery shopping options were simply terrible. I thought for such a wealthy state/area they would have better markets. Stew Leonards in CT was amazing but they only have 2 stores in the whole state, neither of which are incredibly convenient to the New Haven area. I shopped at Stop and Shop up there, which was just a basic store, not a lot of specialty products aside from the small heath food aisle. I prefer Rouses down here because it is much more local, in production of many of the specialty items they sell. They buy local produce, etc.

P.S. I love the banana peanut butter B&J Greek Frozen Yogurt. It's divine!

  9. Our local grocery store in NC is called Harris Teeter and I get those same spicy sweet potato fries. We love them. I confess, however, to dipping them in ranch, which harms the nutrition stats...

  10. I love Applegate Farms turkey dogs. While they're not pretty (think gray and puffy), they taste delicious when they're cooked in the microwave.
